Summer's Best of Weather and Autumn's Best of Cheer

When September rolls around each year the entire town of Cannon Beach lets out one big happy, "Aaaaaah..." We definitely love our fast-paced summer months and the scenes of little ones running down to the beach, the glow of evening bonfires and families hanging out in front of Osborne's Ice Cream, but for the people who call Cannon Beach home, September, with its beautiful weather and smaller crowds, is a sweet reward for another hard-earned successful summer.

For such a small community (population of 1,695!), Cannon Beach has much to offer our visitors. From scenic outdoors adventures, to unique cultural happenings and memorable dining experiences you could visit several times a year and have a different itinerary of things to do each time. In our upcoming newsletters this year we'd like to share with you some of our favorite things we like to do with family and friends. Hopefully we will be able to open your eyes to some unexpected Cannon Beach treasures.

How many of you enjoy the historic photographs that adorn the walls of our properties? Those photos come from our friends at the Cannon Beach History Center. Don't let that small building on Sunset Blvd. fool you. Within those walls awaits something for the history buff, the naturalist, the artist and the lover of all things Cannon Beach. Along with their visually rich interactive exhibits, the History Center hosts 2 to 3 events every month of the year. On September 10th the Center will be hosting it's 8th Annual Cottage Tour featuring vintage cottages, grand beach homes and architectural beauties. On the last Saturday of each month the Center hosts its Acoustic Folk! music series. The last two concerts of the year are September 24th featuring Bill Hayes and October 29th featuring the Wild Hog in the Woods band. The History Center also hosts an always interesting monthly lecture series.
On October 12th author Gloria Linkey will be discussing her book Native American Women: Three Who Changed History, the tale of three Pacific Northwest Native Women who have impacted modern culture.

For all of the runners out there the Cannon Beach Children's Center will be hosting it's 2nd Annual Rock the Beach 5K & 10K Run/Walk on October 1st. It is a gorgeous run. The 5K is all on the beach and the 10k loop is 1/2 on beach and 1/2 through scenic Cannon Beach. To celebrate your finish the Children's Center will be hosting a BBQ lunch and music in City Park.

Lastly for those of you who would like to fit in a beautiful fall hike before the weather heads South we'd like to share with you one of our favorite lesser known beach hikes. The Hug Point Wayside, 5 miles south of Cannon Beach at milepost 33, offers a great little hike that often gets overlooked by the masses traveling down highway 101. Walk just ten minutes north of the parking area and you will find the original trail carved into the point by stagecoaches traveling down the coast in the late 19th century. The wayside was named after this trail because the stagecoaches had to "hug" this particular point to get around it.  Before reaching the point there are amazing sandstone rock formations, a beautiful waterfall and several large caves to explore. Be sure to bring your camera and make sure you are aware of the tides - you don't want to get stuck on the point if the tide is coming in.
